Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Either as a separate treatment or in combination with other treatments, injectable fillers can remove or reduce wrinkles and scarring, create richer lips, as well as treat lipoatrophy underneath the skin. This operation takes little time and produces almost immediate results and offers an effective method of recreating a smooth, younger appearance. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar molecule, which main function is binding and absorbing water molecules, thus creating volume in the face.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

These fillers are usually used to treat wrinkles and folds, as well as to improve lips. Hyaluronic acid fillers are one of the most popular skin fillers being used. They work by replacing hyaluronic acid in the body, depleted as the body ages, restoring the volume underneath the skin. There are several acid filler types available, but the most popular are Hylaform, Restylane and Juvederm. The first one, Hylaform, consists of bird-derived hyaluronic acid. Restylane and Juvederm are both produced in laboratory environments, artificially. Hyaluronic acid fillers cannot lead to allergy, so allergy skin testing is not required. Usually, hyaluronic acid operations last around fifteen to sixty minutes.

Before starting the treatment, the areas to be treated are cleansed, often using an alcohol-based cleaning solution. Contrary to the collagen injections, hyaluronic acid doesn’t include an anesthetic agent. Thus, local or topical anesthetic should be applied to numb the area, being treated. Using a special needle, hyaluronic acid gets inserted into the skin in several points, along the borders of treatment area. After two or three injections, physician massages treated area. The doctor will continue injecting the acid along the length of wrinkles or folds, so that appropriate correction would be achieved.

In the case of local anesthesia not being used, minor stinging from the injections can be experienced. After the injected acid starts attracting water, the volume beneath the epidermis starts increases. Right after the operation, redness, light stinging and bruising of the area may occur, as well as tiny scabs along the injection points. All of the symptoms usually disappear in around two to three days. There is no need for bandaging and normal activities can be restarted immediately after the treatment. While the resulting effects are immediate, hyaluronic acid injections can’t provide the same long-time treatment that cosmetic surgery does.
