Skin Exfoliation

We have always been told that the journey towards a clear, beautiful skin starts with a proper cleanse. However, we often forget that regular exfoliation is needed to maintain our radiant skin. Our skin goes through a lot of changes all year round and is forced to adapt to the changing seasons. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells from the outer layer of skin leading to a bright and smooth skin, but, if not done properly, it could do more harm than good.

If exfoliation is new to you, read on to find out some interesting facts about this skin care essential!

Does your skin exfoliate naturally?

Your skin renews itself naturally in 25 days when it’s young, but the process begins to slow down when you reach the age of 30 resulting in pigmentations and dull complexion.

Endless benefits of exfoliation

Exfoliation removes dead skin, reduces pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to revealing fresh skin cells, exfoliating removes dead cells from pores, making them appear smaller. The other major perk: Removing the build-up enhances your skin’s ability to absorb everything else, from acne medicine to anti-aging serum.

Choose wisely from the many types of exfoliants:

Exfoliants are of many types, shapes and sizes like mechanical or chemical exfoliants. Mechanical exfoliation uses a tool, such as a brush or sponge, or a scrub to physically remove dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliation uses chemicals, such as alpha and beta hydroxy acids, to gently dissolve dead skin cells. The more aggressive the exfoliation, the less often it needs to be done.

Say yes to chemical exfoliant:

The use of glycolic acid is a great way to remove dead and damaged layers of skin without scrubbing your skin off.

Waxing counts, too:

Waxing is also a form of exfoliation. So, make sure you avoid exfoliating your skin before and after your wax to prevent excessive exfoliation of your skin.

Exfoliate gently:

Exfoliating too often and too hard does more harm than good. Make sure you do it gently. If you use a scrub or chemical exfoliator, apply the product gently using small, circular motions. Do this for about 30 seconds, and then rinse off with lukewarm – not hot – water. Never exfoliate if you have open cuts or wounds or if your skin is sunburned.

Remove your makeup before exfoliating:

Take off your makeup and cleanse your skin properly before exfoliating. Exfoliating can be drying to the skin. Apply moisturiser immediately after exfoliating to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.

Can body scrub be used on face?

Body scrubs aren’t meant for the face as they have harsher, larger granules meant for the skin below your neck.

Can I get exfoliation done by a physician?

Microdermabrasion and chemical peels are certain procedures that help in gentle and safe exfoliation of your skin at your physician’s office.

Can eye area be exfoliated?

Never use a scrub around your eyes. Check the label to be sure if its safe for your eyes. Some exfoliators contain retinol that prompts cell turnover, ultimately revealing a fresh layer of skin—are specifically made for the delicate eye tissue.

Can all the skin types be exfoliated in the same way?

Since every type of exfoliation may not work for every skin type, it’s important to consider your skin type before choosing an exfoliation method:

For oily skin type:

Stay away from rough physical scrubs, which can contribute to breakouts. Chemical versions—such as a face wash made with hydroxy acids like glycolic or salicylic—remove glime and penetrate oil to break down pore-clogging dead skin cells. Exfoliating your skin too often and too roughly puts your sebaceous glands into a frenzy causing them to produce more oil than needed ultimately causing more breakouts. It’s better to exfoliate just once or twice a week.

For dry skin:

Gentle chemical exfoliators work best for dry skin (an AHA-rich serum dissolves bonds between dead cells) and ensure proper absorption of hydrating lotion.

For sensitive skin:

Coarse scrubs are off-limits, you can benefit from a mild, short-contact exfoliating product.  Just be sure you’re not over-exfoliating, since you can make your skin barrier [your outermost layer of skin] super vulnerable, destroying the physiology of it. This can also dehydrate the skin, creating tiny cracks in it when it dries it out, inviting in more bacteria, which can then break you out all over again.
