The proportion and shape of the buttocks are essential in a well-proportionate and attractive body.  The buttocks can be too small or lack shape, which may lead to feelings of self-consciousness or dissatisfaction with one's appearance. Buttock augmentation with fat grafting, or butt lift, is a cosmetic procedure that can improve the appearance of the buttocks by making them larger or shapelier.

Buttock augmentation procedure is classified into two types. They are:

  • Autologous fat transfer or Brazilian butt lift
  • Buttock implants

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

A Brazilian butt lift is a cosmetic procedure that uses your fat to enhance the appearance of your buttocks. The fat is usually taken from other areas of your body, such as the thighs, hips, or stomach. It is then injected into the buttocks to give them more volume and shape. The procedure is also sometimes called autologous fat transfer or fat grafting.

What are buttock implants?

Buttock implants are artificial devices that are used to increase the size and shape of the buttocks. The implants are usually made of silicone, a type of rubber. They are placed under the skin and muscles of the buttocks.

Fat transfer to buttocks or butt lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia.  The first step is to harvest fat from the donor sites through a liposuction procedure. Commonly, fat is suctioned from pre-determined regions like the stomach, hips, or thighs and other regions like inner thighs, arms or bra line region, and upper back. After harvesting the fat, it is processed and purified in a centrifuge. The purified fat is then injected into the buttocks through small incisions. The surgeon will sculpt the buttocks to create a fuller and more curvaceous shape.

After the surgery, a special compression garment is worn for a few weeks to minimize swelling. There will be some bruising and discomfort after surgery, which can be controlled with medication.
