Obesity, Overweight, excessive weight Gain, Localised accumulation of Fat

Being overweight and obese is a complicated disorder that inolves an overabundant amount of body fat percentage in your body. So what is obesity exactly? Obesity is not just a cosmetic concern for a lot of people but also a medical problem that puts you at a high risk of other diseases and various health complications, like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and even cancer.

There are various reasons why a lot of people find it difficult to lose excessive weight. Generally, obesity is caused due to various physiological and environmental factors, improper diet routine, lack of physical activity, excessive weight gain in pregnancy, or sometimes inherited.

Sometimes, people may also suffer from a localized accumulation of fat, medically termed lipodystrophy.  This is a disorder that adversely affects how an individual’s body accumulates and stores fat. Those with this disease tend to accumulate fat on only certain areas of the body like the neck, face, abdominal obesity, love handles, or thighs while there will not be much fat in the arms. Since these fat deposits tend to be resistant to any type of diet or exercise, most people easily get discouraged and unmotivated when their efforts begin to fail them. Nevertheless, there are many treatment techniques - both invasive and non-invasive, that will help people get rid of unwanted and excessive fat.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of being overweight include;

  • Shortness of breath
  • Unusual sweating
  • Excessive body fat, especially around the waist
  • Snoring
  • Sleep trouble
  • Skin issues due to moisture accumulating on the folds of the skin
  • Difficulty performing even the simplest physical tasks
  • Mild to extreme fatigue
  • Having an overweight BMI of 25 or above
  • Psychological issues or negative thoughts
  • Back pain or joint pain

Causes

The main reason behind obesity is eating more calories than you actually burn in an exercise routine or daily activity on a long-term basis. Over the course of time, these additional calories add up and cause excessive weight gain. However, it is not always about calories in or calories out or having the perfect sedentary lifestyle. While this can indeed cause obesity, sometimes there is more to it - where you can’t control the causes with just diet and workout.

Some of the most common particular causes of being overweight include;

  • Genetic conditions that adversely affect the way your body processes food and stores them as fat
  • Ageing can cause a slower metabolic rate and reduce the muscle mass making it easier to gain excess weight
  • Not getting enough sleep, that leads to hormonal imbalance - making you feel hungry all the time and crave high-calorie dishes. This is what causes abdominal obesity
  • Excessive weight gain in pregnancy that may be difficult to lose

Sometimes if you suffer from certain health complications, you may be prone to having an overweight BMI. They include;

  • PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) - causing hormonal imbalance in the female reproductive system
  • Prader-Willi syndrome - an extremely rare disorder that is present right from the birth causing excessive hunger
  • Cushing syndrome condition - causing high levels of cortisol, otherwise known as stress hormones
  • Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid - a condition where there is not enough production of certain hormones in the thyroid gland
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) or other conditions - causing pain that leads to reduced activity
