Under-eye circles may be a result of genetics. Or it may be a result of lack of sleep, illness, or fluid retention. Therefore, some under-eye circles can be reversed, others cannot.

Whether it is genetics or lethargy, both cause congestion of your blood vessel circulation, hyperpigmentation, or shadowing. Congestion of blood vessel circulation leads to fluid-build up (edema) in the under-eye area, aka the “puffy eyes.”

Hyperpigmentation is excessive skin pigment; it usually causes brown discoloration under the eyes. Shadowing occurs when facial contours cast a shadow on the under-eye area. Depending on bone structure, eyeball level of recession into the eye socket, or amount of aging skin that has loosened, shadowing may be more or less severe.

Aging, which results in thin, loose and wrinkled skin can darken the eye area, as can certain medications such as birth control pills, which can dilate blood vessels.

Under-Eye Treatments for Congested Blood Vessels

Lifestyle Changes

  • Exercise to increase circulation
  • Get adequate sleep
  • Balanced diet

Skin Care Treatments

  • Skin care products with Arnica, Vitamin K, and peptides.
  • Cool compresses, such as cool cucumber slices, held to reduce swelling
  • Reduce salt consumption to decrease edema (fluid build-up) and swelling

  Under Eye Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

Sun Protection

  • Use Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB mineral sunscreen everyday.

Skin Lightening Treatments

  • Use skin care products with known skin lighteners (hydroquinone cream, Retin A, AHA’s, kojic acid, azelaic acid, arbutin, topical Vitamin C). Apply with care, since many of these ingredients are harsh to the thin and delicate skin under the eye.
  • Chemical peels- glycolic acid and lactic acid peels are popularly used for improvement of under eye pigmentation. However repeated peels will result in thinning of epidermis( superficial layer of skin) and this may worsen the dark circles.
  • Q switch lasers are effective and safe for dark circles.
  • Platelet-rich plasma-platelet-rich plasma has been used in treating dark circles due to tear trough deformity and wrinkles with appreciable results.
  • Mesoinjections with skin lightening agents provide good improvement in under eye dark circles.

Under-Eye Treatments for Shadowing

  • Use eye creams designed to layer and fill in wrinkles. This will help alter the eye contours and increase the amount of light reflected in previously “shadowed” areas.

Treatment of volume loss under eyes

  • Injections or fillers in the under eye groove to lift the skin and decrease the shadow and also improve under eye area region affected by volume loss.
  • Autologous fat transplantation-Autologous fat transplantation is used to treat periorbital hyperpigmentation due to thin and translucent lower eyelid skin overlying the orbicularis oculi muscle.

Treatment of excess skin leading to wrinkles

  • BlepharoplastyBlepharoplasty is the surgical technique which helps in eliminating dark circles caused by shadows that are cast by fat deposits or excess skin.
  • Non surgical techniques for reduction in fat deposits and loose skin under the eyes include eye thermage and RF skin tightening. Thermage works by inducing collagen formation and volume build up along with skin tightening.
